In 2000, Qian Hongyan lost both legs in a car accident. With limited resources in rural Yunnan, she adapted by walking on her hands, using a halved basketball for support, earning the nickname "Basketball Girl." In 2005, her story gained national attention, allowing her to travel to Beijing for free prosthetic limbs.
