In 2010, 19-year-old Sam Ballard, a rugby player, was drinking with several of his Australian friends when a slug began crawling across the concrete patio at his home in Sydney. His friends dared him to eat it, and he did.
Unfortunately, the slug was infected with a rat lungworm disease. He soon fell into a coma for 420 days, and when he finally regained consiousness, he became paralysed from the waist down. He passed away in 2018 from further complications from the disease.
