Newly crowned La Liga champions Real Madrid are set to face German side Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League 2023-24 final at Wembley Stadium in London, England, on Saturday evening.
Real Madrid, with 14 UEFA Champions League titles, are the most successful team in the competition’s history, having last won the trophy in 2022. This will mark their 17th record appearance in the final of this prestigious tournament.
Los Blancos have had a stellar season, reclaiming the Spanish league title from their fierce rivals Barcelona. They won 29 out of 38 matches in La Liga, suffering only one defeat.
Under Carlo Ancelotti's management, Real Madrid had to work hard to edge out Bayern Munich 4-3 in the UCL semi-finals. Prior to that, they triumphed over defending champions Manchester City on penalties after a 4-4 aggregate tie in the quarter-finals.
Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, have had a season of ups and downs. They ended up fifth in the Bundesliga but have made it to Europe’s biggest stage thanks to resilient performances in the UCL.
Dortmund achieved a 5-4 aggregate victory over Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals and subsequently knocked out French team Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals, winning 2-0 on aggregate with 1-0 victories both home and away.
This will be Dortmund’s third appearance in the Champions League final, having won the title in 1997.
The match will be the 15th encounter between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid. Dortmund have won three of these meetings, while Real Madrid have claimed victory six times, with the remaining five ending in draws.
The two teams last clashed in the Champions League during the 2017-18 season, with Real Madrid winning both group stage matches.
